Opening of Musqueam Learning Pods delayed until Monday Sept. 21

September 11, 2020

Learning Pod registration exceeded expectations

hay ce:p q̓ə to the parents and students who registered for the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Learning Pods. Registration is now closed, and there are over 80 Musqueam students joining us in this new learning environment. This is a much higher number than we were anticipating, which is a wonderful surprise, but resulted in the planning and preparations to safely launch the pods taking longer than anticipated.

To ensure the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Learning Pods open safely and work effectively to protect our community, we will start welcoming students on Monday, September 21, 2020. The week we originally planned to open (September 14) will be used to prepare new classrooms for the increased pod sizes and support teachers to develop learning plans and processes.

The Musqueam Learning Pods were conceptualized and coordinated at the very beginning of September. Two weeks ago, we didn’t think this would be possible or that we would receive such significant support.

We are grateful to our education partners that quickly supported us to provide this learn-from-home option, including the Vancouver School Board and a number of private and independent schools.

hay ce:p q̓ə to the amazing Musqueam educators who have taken on the roles of learning pod lead, teachers and classroom assistants with very short notice. This is a big task, but we know they are dedicated to educating these future leaders safely at home.

We truly believe this can change how Musqueam provides access to education for years to come. To do this, we have to make sure it is launched in the best way possible. Thank you for your patience as we prepare to safely educate your children on reserve this school year.
