All open fires are currently banned in Musqueam Reserve and throughout the region. The only fires that are permitted at this time are controlled, propane fire-pits.
The following types of fires are banned within Musqueam Reserve (IR2):
- Backyard fires (open fire): A fire bigger than 1’8″ (one foot, eight inches) in height and in width and is used by any person for recreational purpose, or by a First Nation for a ceremonial purpose
- Campfires (semi-closure): A fire bigger than 1’8″ (one foot, eight inches) in height and in width and is used by any person for recreational purpose
- River fires (open fire): Bigger than a backyard fire, close to a dry, grassy area
This fire ban aligns with BC Wildfire Service‘s restrictions for the Coastal Fire Centre region of the province, which Musqueam is within.
This prohibition is enacted to help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety. The ban will be in place until October 31, 2025, or until the order is rescinded.

Category 2 and Category 3 open burning, as defined in the Wildfire Regulation, are prohibited across Coastal Fire Centre.
In addition to open fires being prohibited, the following activities and equipment are also restricted in most areas:

- Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description
- Controlled air incinerators
- Air curtain burners
- Carbonizers
- Tiki and similar kinds of torches
This prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall.
Please review the full list of prohibited activities and equipment in your area here.
Prohibitions apply to all public and private land, unless specified otherwise.
Open fire is the largest cause of human-caused fires provincially. Human-caused wildfires are entirely preventable and may divert crucial resources from naturally occurring and/or existing wildfires. Prohibitions are a useful tool used to reduce the likelihood of more human-caused fires in anticipation of increased lightning-caused fires or during critical fire situations.
Anyone who is found in violation of the fire ban may be issued a violation ticket and risks further financial penalties, especially if the fire causes or contributes to a wildfire.
