Vancouver International Airport (YVR) operates on Musqueam traditional territory, where Musqueam holds constitutionally protected Aboriginal rights under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. The Government of Canada and Musqueam Indian Band signed the Rights Recognition Agreement last year which recognizes YVR as operating on Musqueam traditional territory.
Additionally, Musqueam and Vancouver Airport Authority have a strong a mutually beneficial working relationship anchored in the groundbreaking Musqueam Indian Band – YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement.
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement at the Canada Investment Summit, Musqueam indicated to government that any discussion and plans about the future of YVR must include meaningful participation by Musqueam Indian Band. Musqueam remains open to constructive discussions with Transport Canada on the future of YVR.
At this time, it would be premature to discuss any negotiations. Musqueam’s focus remains on providing stability and supporting the next generation’s success while honouring core Musqueam values and territory.
