Yesterday, equipment blockage at the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant resulted in an emergency release of wastewater into the plant’s marine outfall, located several kilometers into the Strait of Georgia. After an investigation, it was discovered that some rocky debris in the plant’s intake was the cause.
The Musqueam Public Works and Emergency Management Departments were notified immediately, and Metro Vancouver crews were dispatched shortly after to inspect the line on Musqueam lands, where they have found no evidence of impact. Currently, there are no localized impacts on fish, shellfish, birds and recreational waters on Musqueam Village IR2.
