Sperling Substation Art Installation
BC Hydro and Musqueam are seeking a Musqueam artist to design an original art or educational installation for the Sperling Substation. The installation will be displayed on a highly visible piece of land at West King Edward and Arbutus Street.
Request for Musqueam Artist Proposals
BC Hydro and Musqueam are requesting proposals from experienced and emerging Musqueam artists for an art installation.
The goal of the installation is to increase recognition of Musqueam’s ancestral territory in the area, bring a spirit and feeling of Musqueam community to the Arbutus Greenway, and reflect Musqueam art forms, history and contemporary culture.
Project specifications
This call is for a stand-alone installation on a 44m x 17m x 52m x 2.75 m piece of land off of Arbutus Greenway.
At this time, no specific type of installation is defined. Artists are encouraged to think creatively about how this space could be used.

Eligibility
This project is open to both aspiring and established Musqueam artists working in a style reflective of Musqueam culture. Partnerships between emerging and experienced artists are encouraged.
Submission requirements
- Preliminary design document or sketch of the project with clearly labelled measurements;
- A brief (500 word) description of the project describing your vision and how it fits with project goals;
- A preliminary budget estimate;
- Examples of previous work (up to 5 images). Digital images should be no more than 2 mb each. Original artworks should not be submitted.
Compensation
The commission value is up to $70,000, including artist’s fee, materials, sealed engineering drawings, fabrication and crating and shipping to the site.
Deadline
Artists can submit their applications by email or by dropping it off at the band office front desk by December 1, 2021 January 1, 2021.
