On December 3, 2025, Musqueam Council sent a letter to Dallas Brodie, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Vancouver-Quilchena.
Below is the full letter, which is also in our December newsletter.
Dear MLA Brodie,
RE: Request for Immediate Resignation
The xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band) Chief and Council write to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding your recent statements and actions that deny the truth of residential schools and perpetuate harmful narratives about Indigenous peoples.
Residential schools caused immeasurable harm to generations of First Nations families, including Musqueam. Survivors and their families continue to live with the trauma of cultural erasure, abuse, and displacement. Denialism retraumatizes survivors and undermines decades of healing and reconciliation work.
Denialism also causes strained partnerships between Musqueam and others and heightens cultural safety concerns. It compounds existing challenges in policing and justice for Musqueam. It negatively affects youth education, language revitalization, and public understanding of Indigenous history.
Your rhetoric is incompatible with the values of truth, respect, and reconciliation that British Columbians expect from elected officials. It erodes trust and divides communities.
Musqueam stands firm in our commitment to truth and reconciliation. When elected officials deny the reality of residential schools, it retraumatizes survivors and undermines decades of healing work. We call for accountability and respect for the truth—our children, families, and future generations deserve nothing less.
Our leaders carry themselves and the business of our people in an honourable and respectful manner. We expect the same from all public officials. Denialism and anti-Indigenous rhetoric have no place in the Legislature.
Musqueam’s Position
- We call on you to resign your seat immediately.
- We urge you to reflect on the harm caused and take responsibility for your words and actions.
We expect better from those entrusted with public office. We urge you to act now in the interests of reconciliation and the well‑being of all British Columbians.
Sincerely,
xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band) Chief and Council
