Housing project survey open now for community feedback

August 20, 2020

Musqueam Community Rental Complex

Musqueam housing project survey open now

The Musqueam Community Rental Complex (MCRC) is a multi-family affordable housing project being developed on Lot 95 at Crown Place, on Musqueam Indian Reserve 2. This project has been in the works since 2018, and this summer it reaches a new milestone in planning.

Today we are excited to launch the next phase of information sharing and community engagement on the future of this housing complex — the 2020 Musqueam Community Rental Complex housing project survey.

Three project site concepts were developed, with one being the recommended approach by the team. The online community survey presents the site concepts and asks for your input on height, density, amenities and how to we want to represent Musqueam culture throughout the complex.

The survey is open from August 20 – 31, 2020. Your feedback will help inform Chief and Council in deciding which project site to move forward with.

Project basics

Last year, the community heard about the basics of this new housing project, including how it will:

  • provide homes for up to 200 Musqueam members and their families
  • be approximately 74 affordable rental units, including townhomes, bachelor/1-bdrm+ apartments
  • be located on Lot 95 Crown Place
  • include childcare centre and new community spaces

Where we are now

We are still at the very beginning of this project. Since last summer, the team has:

  • completed the site analysis
  • determined the capacity for housing units on the site
  • developed a project vision and site guiding principles

Musqueam Community Rental Complex Site Analysis and Location Context

Currently, the team is working to confirm the project scope. To do this, we need to determine which of three site concepts we will build, and we want to hear what you think. Normally we would hold in-person information sessions, but due to COVID-19, we had to change the way we share information and get feedback. Although there will be more reliance on online tools, this is a new opportunity to engage all Musqueam Members on this project.

Site Concepts Survey – what do you think?

The Musqueam Community Rental Complex project team is excited to present three different site concepts for community input. Each of the concepts has its own pros and cons, and there is one concept the team recommends because it best meets the project site guiding principles.

To learn about the three concepts and provide your input, there is an anonymous online survey with video presentations from Ouri Scott, a Tlicho Dene architect working with the project.

The survey is open to ALL Musqueam Members from August 20 – 31, 2020 and takes approximately 30 mins to complete. Throughout the survey, there are external links to video presentations on the MIB Vimeo page.

It will ask you:

  • where you live now
  • what you think about the concepts
  • your preference for height and density
  • ideas on building amenities and representing culture

You can also read the information on the MCRC page of our website:

  2. MCRC Site Concepts A, B and C
  3. Recommended Site Concept
  4. Site Access Options and Density

Information Session

If you prefer to learn about the concepts through a live presentation and ask questions directly to the project team, there will be an information session on Wednesday August 26 at 6pm on Zoom Webinar open to all Musqueam Members.

REGISTER NOW

Members who live on reserve can attend in-person by pre-registering with MIB Reception: 604-263-3261. Maximum 35 attendees. Paper copies of the survey will be available at the info session, and we will walk through the questions with you.

What’s next?

Once this community survey is complete and reported back to Chief and Council, we will move into the schematic design phase. The plan is to submit for a development permit in late fall 2020, with construction starting in spring 2021.  Members will move into their new homes in spring 2023.
